The African Academy of Sciences (AAS)

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) was established in 1985. Among the 33 founding fellows, two (2) were Tanzanians. These are Prof Mawenya, the founding Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, UDSM and the late Prof Shayo of Mathematics Department, UDSM.

AAS is a pan-African organization dedicated to recognizing scientific excellence and driving research, technology, and sustainable development across the continent.

Prof Sospeter Muhongo is currently the Vice President of Eastern Africa Region, and his mandate covers 14 countries - Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda
